PURPOSE OF THE ANOINTING

The Anointing of the God was done in the old testament by pouring oil on someone or something to set the person or that thing apart; for a special purpose. Anointing was performed for high priest, tabernacle vessels, for kings and prophets. Why? Because they had a special purpose. When Jesus Christ came into this world, He was given a name in Hebrew “Messiah” which it’s Greek equivalent Christ but both had one meaning, Anointed One. In the Bible, God told Moses to prepare an Anointing Oil, and use is to anoint the Tabernacle, Ark of the Testimony, Tables and his Vessels and the Candlestick and his vessels. God told Moses to do this to sanctify them so they may be Holy and even whatever touches these things will also be Holy because the things symbolized Christ. Afterwards God told Moses to Anoint Aaron and His Sons and consecrate them for them to work in the Priest Office. The Oil that the Prophet of God used, and are still using isn’t he important think but the Spirit of God imbedded in the Oil.

22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:  25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary:  it shall be a holy anointing oil.   26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, 27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, 28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot.   29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy:  whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.   30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.   31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, this shall be a holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.   32 Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it:  it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.   33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people. (Exodus 30: 22-33).

In the Scriptures there are some people who were called just straight from birth. An example is Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:16), John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-25), Jesus Christ (Luke 1:26-38). And since they were called into a special assignment and ministry, the Lord gave unto them The Anointing of the Holy Spirit. And there are people in the world who desired the calling which was on people’s life. Because they desired something good, He (God) gave unto them the anointing to accomplish the task ahead of them.

What does the anointing do?

Have said earlier that Oil were poured on Priest, Kings, Prophets etc. signifying the Anointing of the Holy Spirit. One thing the Anointing does is;

1.       Gives you Strength (Power) to do the work of God. In Acts 1:8, Bible says “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:  and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”  Inside the Anointing is the Spirit of God, whom the Scripture describes Him as our helper, comforter. So when you are anointed you receive a package containing the Holy Spirit which enables you to work above human imagination.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26

2.       The Anointing sets us Apart. One significant purpose of the Anointing is to set us apart in wherever we are. Setting apart means the anointing (Holy Spirit) becomes the difference in your Family, class, work, friends etc. Because of your assignment the Anointing gives different attitude of living, utterance and new ways of doing things which are exceptional from the what is initially there.

3.       The Anointing Preserves us. In the book of Psalm 105:15 & 1 Chronicles 16:22 propagate the same message. Where God talks about not touching the one he has anointed and do His Prophets no Harm. “Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” Psalm 105:15. Why do you think God made this profound statement?

Because the Anointing the person carries qualifies him to be a different person and carries the Presence of God. In 1 Samuel 10, Samuel anointed Saul and turned into another man. A man who was not a prophet when he was going out became a prophet when he was returning home. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and Carried the Presence of God.

In 1 Samuel 24:1-13, Saul pursued David’s life for a longer time, but here David had the chance to destroy his enemy. But he spared Saul’s life, because of the Anointing that was on Saul. Even when David decided to cut a corner of Saul’s robe, Bible says his Heart Struck Him.

This is what David Said, “And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.” 1 Samuel 24:6

Beloved because of the Anointing Saul’s precious Life was Spared. We need the Anointing of the Holy Spirit if we want to go through in all our endeavors. Remember the Spirit of God makes the Oil relevant.
