BUILDING THE BROKEN WALLS
Walls are structures
built for defense surrounding a city. A city walls keeps it enemies from
advancing and protect the people inside from any harm. But when those walls are
breached- when stone is torn from stone so that mere rubbles remains- the city
and its people are left vulnerable to every wind that blows and every vandal
that prowls.
The theme for the Book
of Nehemiah is the Lord’s protection of his people and their need to be
faithful in worship and in keeping the Mosaic law.
Nehemiah 1: 1-3
In the month of Kislev in the
twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2 Hanani, one
of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them
about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about
Jerusalem.3 They said to me, “Those who survived the
exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The
wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
The report he
received wasn’t the best of reports. But that was it, the walls of Jerusalem were
broken down and its gates are destroyed by fires. The first thing Nehemiah did
was to go on his knees and prayed unto God. He knew the place of his fathers
was in ruins so he cried and mourned. Though he was comfortable at the palace
of Susa but wasn’t comfortable with the report.
Today, walls that
once provided protection against the enemy’s schemes are crumbling all around
us in our families, churches, relationships, ministry, work etc. There is one
thing we can learn from Nehemiah. He cried unto God and was ready to rebuild the
broken walls of Jerusalem.
Perhaps you have gone along with the ways of the world. You have
fallen into practices that the Bible says are wrong, and you know they are
wrong. But you have difficulty stopping them. Perhaps your drift began
innocently. You did not realize you were forming a habit, but now you no longer
can stop it. Your defenses are gone. The walls of your city are broken down,
and perhaps your gates are also burned. Brethren all isn’t lost yet.
Practically our walls can be our finances, marriages, work,
business, relationships, spiritual life etc. Almost everybody who’s ever wanted
to make something of their life, has hit a brick wall, a challenge that they
struggled to overcome. But there is one thing for sure every broken wall can be
fixed. It needs;

Self-dedication
In
building broken walls opposition is inevitable, in the chapter 4 of the book of
Nehemiah there was an opposition. Sanballat and Tobiah stood on their grounds
and despised Nehemiah and his people and was even angry about they trying build
their broken walls. That’s how this life is, because they know when those walls
are fixed, they won’t get any way into you again, they will always oppose it.
But with determination and resilience any broken wall will be fixed. Rebuilding
will always demand a lot work which will be obvious for others to see. Some
will mock you but all you need is to be focused.
Nehemiah
4: 1-3
When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the
wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2 and
in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, “What
are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer
sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life
from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?” 3 Tobiah the
Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox
climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”
As you examine the walls and the gates of your
life, you find much of it in ruins. How do you handle that? Pray about it and be ready to rebuild.
Prayer: Lord, show me the
broken walls You want me to rebuild. Use me to rebuild the broken foundations
in my life and in the lives of others. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
